Phone Home Durham

Power Plant Gallery | July 14-August 22, 2015

Exhibition information: Power Plant Gallery

As curators cautiously toe the teeming waters of mobile-phone and other vernacular photography—what is worth preserving, and how should it be preserved?—Power Plant dives right in, letting amateur shutterbugs become gallery artists in Phone Home Durham, an exhibit that will be on view and evolving for much of the summer. The gallery solicited phone photos taken in Durham County and, with help from Museo Digital Fine Art Media, printed a selection of them to run throughout the show. If you missed the deadline, you can still submit your shots to be considered for a “rotating wall” that will change over with new photos every three weeks. These are curated by Alexa Dilworth of the Center for Documentary Studies (May 29June 20), INDY photographer Jeremy Lange (June 23July 11), MFA|EDA graduate Aaron Canipe (July 14Aug. 1) and art photographer Jim Lee (Aug. 422). All photos from the main and rotating exhibits will be added to the Archive of Documentary Arts in Duke’s Rubenstein Library. This unique community snapshot of one Durham summer has its closing reception Aug. 21.
