NC Mutual co-founder John Merrick prejected onto Duke Chapel.

With the removal of Robert E. Lee’s statue from the Chapel portal and the recently announced decision to leave the space vacant for the foreseeable future, the unoccupied alcove is symbolically important and affords an opportunity for an onging artistic intervention projecting pivotal, yet under-represented historic figures who had an impact on Duke, Durham and/or the South in the now-empty alcove. Durham, NC artist Dan Smith conducted such an intervention on the evening of November 15, 2017 projecting images of Julian Abele, Eudora Welty, John Merrick, Ella Baker, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Caterina Jarboro on the alcove for four hours, engaging dozens of students, faculty, staff and community members in dialogue about memorialization, representation, identity and community.
